Each year, the St. George Marathon selects an honorary runner/runners to draw attention to special needs. Lori Hutchison, who has run the St. George Marathon many times since 1990, began her trip to St. George on September 18 at the Idaho/Utah border.  She is running the entire distance averaging a marathon a day.  After running the St. George Marathon, she will run to the Arizona border.  She is raising awareness and money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) that provides prosthetics and adaptive equipment to athlete in need.  Check out her booth at the Expo and her motorhome at the finish of the race.

Last fall, DARBY RILEY, a fifth grader at Washington Elementary, arrived at school with a sore heel and was unable to participate in P.E. class. After a few weeks, this began to concern her parents who took her in for a checkup.  The checkup revealed bone cancer. Darby has undergone a total of 10 rounds of chemotherapy which required 4 to 5 days in the hospital, some of which required travel to Salt Lake City.

In June, it was determined that Darby would need to have her leg amputated just below the knee.  The operation was a success and Darby was able to return to school where she serves on the student council and is the manager for our school's "Heart of a Champion" running team.  Things were looking up.

On September 24, Darby slipped as she was getting out of the bathtub, resulting in a fractured femur in her amputated leg. This is an incredible setback considering the progress Darby was making. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

It is our goal to help Darby get a prosthetic leg. Darby’s principal, Burke Staheli, would like you invite you to help Darby’s family by being a part of  the “DO IT FOR DARBY” Marathon Program.  Here’s how it will work:

1. Mr. Staheli will run the St. George Marathon on October 3 to support Darby’s Family.

2.  He is challenging you or your group to donate $26.20 ($1.00 per mile of the marathon)   Donations can be made to “Do it For Darby”, c/o Burke Staheli, and can be sent to 1723 S. Carma St., Washington, UT 84780. You can also stop in at the "Two Good Legs" booth at the marathon expo and meet Darby and make a donation.

3. As you make your donation, you will be given a purple ribbon, (Darby’s Favorite Color) to tie to your shoelace, car antenna, or hair.  You can use this to remind yourself of the difference you are making.

4. All proceeds will be donated to Darby’s family to aide in the purchase of a prosthetic leg and to alleviate medical expenses already incurred.

"Marathon runners, by definition, have big hearts. Those of us with two good legs can make such a difference.   I can promise you that helping this amazing young lady will help you as you take each step toward the finish line.  Thank you!"  Burke Staheli
